In a groundbreaking move to enhance healthcare access, the Katsina State Government has launched a free healthcare scheme tailored specifically for retirees. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Katsina Times, Dr. Muhammad Tukur Safana, Executive Director of the Katsina State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KTSCHMA), highlighted the scheme's objectives, significance, and implementation strategies.  

Dr. Safana expressed gratitude to the retirees who attended the enrollment exercise held at the Katsina Local Government Secretariat. He revealed, “This initiative was directed by His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umar Radda, to ensure that all retirees from both the state and local governments are registered under the scheme. This measure aims to reduce the financial burden of healthcare costs on retirees and ensure uninterrupted access to quality services.”  

He described the scheme as a historic milestone for the state. “Providing lifetime healthcare coverage for retirees is a commendable step,” Dr. Safana stated. “Katsina State has set a national precedent by becoming the first state in Nigeria to implement such a comprehensive program for its retirees.”  

The scheme grants retirees access to both primary and secondary healthcare services at facilities they select during enrollment. Additionally, emergency care is assured. Dr. Safana emphasized the importance of retirees understanding their rights and utilizing the opportunities provided, stressing the program's value in improving their quality of life.  

“Most retirees are aged 60 and above, making them a vulnerable group,” he explained. “This initiative provides them with free health insurance, ensuring they receive necessary care throughout their lives.”  

Dr. Safana also outlined the agency's broader vision to extend healthcare coverage to all residents of Katsina State. He disclosed that the agency plans to enroll up to half a million people in the scheme by the end of the year. “Our mandate is to guarantee that all residents of Katsina State have easy access to healthcare services whenever and wherever needed,” he said.  

The Executive Director urged beneficiaries to maximize this opportunity. “This is a unique chance for retirees to access high-quality healthcare. If they encounter any issues at their chosen healthcare facilities, they should report to the agency for prompt resolution,” he added.  

Dr. Safana concluded by commending the Katsina State Government, particularly Governor Radda, for initiating the program despite economic challenges. “This bold step reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of retirees and its dedication to advancing healthcare services in Katsina State.”
