In a collaborative effort to support Katsina State Government’s environmental sanitation policies, traders at the Himata (popularly known as Chake) Market in Katsina metropolis embarked on a large-scale environmental cleanup exercise on the morning of Saturday, April 5, 2025.
The exercise, which commenced at 7:00 am, was spearheaded by the leadership of the Himata Traders' Association in partnership with Al’ Musik Ventures. It attracted a significant number of market traders who actively participated in sweeping and cleaning various sections of the busy market.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of the Himata Traders' Association, Malam Saminu Aliyu, emphasized the importance of regular market sanitation, especially in line with the state government’s ongoing urban cleanliness campaign.
“This type of activity should be conducted periodically by all markets. It not only complements the efforts of the Katsina State Government but also enhances the health and well-being of the general public. We have resolved to carry out similar sanitation exercises at the end of every month moving forward. Cleanliness is everyone's responsibility, and we will continue working together to protect our health and promote our businesses,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the association, Malam Dahiru Tijjani, praised the traders’ cooperation under the market's new leadership. He highlighted the market's contribution to employment creation, revealing that the market supports about 25% youth employment in the area while also generating internal revenue for the state government. He added that effective measures have been put in place to manage roadside trading and reduce congestion within the market vicinity.
Beyond the cleanup, a Qur’anic recitation session and special prayers were held, seeking lasting peace in Katsina State and divine mercy for the late mother of Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umar Radda.
Prominent personalities who attended the exercise include Alhaji Ibrahim Halilu, Nura Garba, Alhaji Yahaya, Na’im Lawal, Shamsu Salele, and several other patriotic traders who contributed to the success of the event.
The Himata (Chake) Market, once a small community trading center, has evolved into one of the major commercial hubs in Katsina. It now attracts traders and investors from nearby villages and even parts of the Republic of Niger. The market plays a critical role in the distribution of essential goods and continues to contribute significantly to the local economy. Both the government and market leaders are working towards improving infrastructure and ensuring sustained environmental hygiene for long-term development.
