A committee overseeing the NG-SURWASH water supply project in Katsina State conducted an inspection tour on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, to assess the progress of ongoing rehabilitation and expansion works on major water facilities in the state capital.

Led by Muhammad Yusuf Sudais, the committee, accompanied by journalists, visited seven key water stations located in Tudun ‘Yallihidda/Yammawa, Dutsin Safe Locust, Rahamawa/Abattoir, Sabuwar Unguwa/Janbango, Barhim Housing Estate, Barhim (Behind NYSC Camp), and Makera Housing Estate. These facilities, originally established during the administration of Malam Ibrahim Shehu Shema over a decade ago, are now undergoing a major upgrade under the World Bank-funded NG-SURWASH project, aimed at improving clean water supply across the state.

Key Upgrades and Expansions

The project includes:

  • Modernization of existing water stations.
  • Installation of solar-powered systems to ensure sustainable water supply.
  • Expansion of water distribution networks to serve more communities.
  • Addition of new storage tanks to increase capacity.

Following the inspection, committee members engaged with local residents, who expressed appreciation for the initiative and pledged to safeguard the newly installed facilities.

Community Reactions

A resident of Dutsin Safe shared his excitement:
"Previously, we struggled with water shortages, especially when the diesel-powered boreholes stopped working. Now, with expanded storage tanks and solar-powered pumps, we are assured of a more reliable supply. Even neighboring communities will benefit from this upgrade."

Statewide Expansion of the Project

Beyond Katsina city, the NG-SURWASH project is being implemented across all 34 local government areas, positioning Katsina as a leading state in tackling water scarcity in Nigeria.

The Katsina Times will continue to monitor and report on the progress of this crucial initiative.
