Afghan man on terror watchlist apprehended in US

Kabul: An Afghan national, previously apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border and released twice onto American soil, is back in custody, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Mohammed Karwan, a member of Hezb-e-Islami, was initially captured in March 2023 near San Ysidro, California, but was not on the terror watchlist at that time. He was later added to the FBI terror watchlist in February 2024, prompting his arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Antonio.

During a recent court appearance, Department of Homeland Security prosecutors reportedly did not disclose Karwan’s terror watchlist status, arguing only that he was a possible flight risk. Despite being on the watchlist, the judge ordered his release on bond.

Hezb-e-Islami, described as a political and paramilitary organization in Afghanistan, is associated with anti-Western insurgent activities in the region.
