KABUL – Russia again increased pressure on the Taliban on Thursday to create an inclusive government representing a broad spectrum of Afghan society, reminding the ruling group to fulfill their promises.

In a recent press conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that a key aspect of the Taliban’s commitments is the establishment of an inclusive government that extends beyond ethnic Pashtuns, the predominant group among the Taliban. “The Afghan government should incorporate representatives from all ethnic groups, fostering political inclusion,” TASS quoted Lavrov as saying.

This is as the Taliban don’t represent any ethnic group per se and is merely a group that rode to power under U.S. auspices.

Lavrov also urged, highlighting Russia’s stance on encouraging a more diverse and inclusive political landscape in Afghanistan. “We actively recommend the Taliban to invite other political forces to the ruling structure,’ he said.

Despite the diplomatic engagement, the UN still recognizes diplomats appointed by the government that was overthrown over two years ago.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the necessity of entering into talks with the Taliban government in Afghanistan, citing it as the most advantageous course for the region. While underlining the imperative for dialogue, Lavrov clarified that Russia cannot entertain the idea of recognizing the Taliban unless they meet their commitments to form a government that is inclusive.
