The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has debunked reports of an alleged kidnapping incident at Phase 1 Primary School in the Gbagalape community of Abuja, saying investigations found no evidence of any abduction.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.
According to Adeh, officers attached to the Nyanya Division received a distress call at about 10:30 a.m. alleging that a kidnapping was in progress at the school.
She said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) immediately deployed officers and surveillance teams to the scene to assess the situation and ensure the safety of pupils and staff.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that pupils suddenly began shouting ‘kidnappers’ and running out of the school premises, causing panic among teachers and members of the surrounding community,” she said.
Adeh explained that responding officers cordoned off the school and conducted a thorough search of the premises and surrounding areas.
She said extensive searches and questioning of individuals within and around the school failed to establish any kidnapping incident, while no suspects or victims were identified.
The police spokesperson added that surrounding hills, boundaries and adjoining areas were also searched, while nearby schools were visited as part of precautionary security measures.
“Despite the extensive operation, no evidence of kidnappers or any criminal activity was found,” she stated.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary fear and tension within communities.
Adeh also encouraged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities or emergencies to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 and 07057337653.
