The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has intensified its anti-piracy campaign through the deployment of digital technology, as part of broader efforts to safeguard intellectual property rights and strengthen Nigeria’s creative economy.

The Director-General of the Commission, Dr John Asien, disclosed this on Tuesday in Uyo during an event marking the 2026 World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD), observed annually on April 26.

Represented by the NCC Coordinator in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Cornelia Ibanga, the Director-General said the initiative would be driven through strategic collaboration with key national technology-based institutions.

He noted that the rise in unauthorised streaming of live sports content continues to threaten legitimate markets, discouraging investment in the sector.

According to him, the Commission has stepped up enforcement measures to combat digital piracy and related infringements, leveraging provisions of the Copyright Act, 2022.

“As part of this effort, the NCC is deploying modern enforcement mechanisms to tackle illegal streaming, cable piracy, and unauthorised public exhibitions,” he said.

He added that these actions are aligned with the National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy, a framework designed to support innovation and creativity while contributing to national economic growth under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Asien explained that the policy provides a structured approach to enhancing the creation, protection, and commercialisation of intellectual property across critical sectors.

He further highlighted the potential of Nigerian youths, noting their growing global competitiveness and creativity, which, if properly harnessed through intellectual property systems, could drive sustainable economic development.

The NCC boss urged young Nigerians to deepen their understanding of intellectual property rights and take advantage of opportunities within the sector to monetise their talents and innovations.

In her remarks, the Staff Adviser of the Intellectual Property Society, University of Uyo Chapter, Ms Enobong Etuk, said the WIPD celebration aligns with the institution’s plan to establish a physical office for the society.

She added that beyond academic innovation, sports remain a vital tool for youth engagement, empowerment, and self-reliance.
