The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled its presidential primary election to May 23 as part of adjustments to the party’s timetable for the 2027 general elections.

The decision followed the party’s 186th NWC meeting held in Abuja, where the revised schedule was adopted to align with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Duro Meseko, disclosed the development while briefing journalists, noting that the presidential primary was earlier slated for May 15.

He said the adjustment was necessary to ensure compliance with the amended constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for all elective positions will commence on April 25 and close on May 2, while submission of completed forms is fixed for May 4.

Meseko added that screening of aspirants across all categories—from state assemblies to the presidential race—will take place between May 6 and May 9, with presidential screening scheduled for May 9. Results of the screening exercise are expected to be published on May 11.

He explained that party primaries would be conducted in phases, covering legislative, senatorial, governorship and presidential elections on different dates.

The APC spokesman dismissed claims of restrictions on nomination forms, insisting that the process remains open to all qualified aspirants nationwide.

On the mode of primaries, Meseko said the party would adopt both direct and consensus options as permitted by law, depending on prevailing circumstances.

He noted that consensus arrangements must involve agreement among aspirants and stakeholders, adding that the party would revert to direct primaries where consensus fails.

He further stated that state chapters have been empowered to determine the mode of primaries in their respective states.

In Zamfara State, Meseko disclosed that internal party congresses have been scheduled to commence with ward, local government and state exercises beginning April 28.

“Ward congresses will hold on April 30, while state congresses and appeal processes are expected to be concluded by May 3,” he said.

He also confirmed that the party’s updated national membership register, including new members, has been transmitted to INEC.

Meseko assured that the APC has completed necessary administrative and regulatory procedures and is fully prepared for the 2027 primary elections.
