The Katsina state Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called for closer collaboration with media organizations to strengthen the fight against corruption and financial crimes in Katsina and Zamfara states.

The Acting Zonal Director, Chinedu Ozugha, made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving a delegation of journalists at the commission’s office in Katsina during a courtesy visit.

The delegation was led by Muhammad Danjuma, Editor-in-Chief of Katsina Times Media Group. Other members included media professionals from various outlets such as Deutsche Welle Hausa, News Agency of Nigeria, Manhaja newspaper, and Leadership newspaper, among others.

In his remarks, Ozugha emphasized that the anti-corruption fight must be driven from the grassroots, noting that the media plays a critical role in public sensitization and deterrence.

“We cannot effectively prosecute this fight without the media. If our activities are not publicized, the public remains unaware, and the deterrent effect on offenders is significantly weakened,” he said.

He further highlighted the importance of investigative journalism, noting that in-depth reporting can provide valuable intelligence to security agencies, particularly in uncovering financial networks that support banditry and other criminal activities.

Ozugha disclosed that the Katsina EFCC office, which oversees both Katsina and Zamfara states, is already operational and currently handling multiple petitions related to financial crimes.

“There are numerous cases under investigation. We encourage members of the public to report any suspicious activities, even anonymously, to ensure their safety,” he added.

He also revealed that the commission is working closely with the judiciary to expedite the prosecution of corruption cases, with designated judges assigned to handle EFCC-related matters in the state.

The acting director reiterated the importance of the EFCC’s public affairs unit in driving awareness campaigns, assuring that the commission would continue to engage media platforms across print, broadcast, and digital channels to educate the public.

“Our goal is to build synergy. We want the public to know that EFCC is present and ready to assist. With the cooperation of the media, we can promote transparency and accountability,” he said.

The visit featured an interactive session during which journalists raised questions on public cooperation, economic challenges, and corruption reporting. The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting victims of financial crimes and ensuring justice.

The meeting was described as a significant first step toward strengthening ties between the EFCC and media organizations in the region, aimed at enhancing the anti-corruption drive and promoting good governance.
