Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has welcomed former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing his return as a significant boost to the party’s strength in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said arrangements were underway, in consultation with the party’s national secretariat, to fix a date for the formal reception of Shekarau into the APC.
The governor noted that the party in Kano continued to witness increasing support and consolidation, positioning it as a dominant political force ahead of future elections.
He expressed confidence that the APC was well-prepared to secure victory in all elective positions, citing internal unity and ongoing political realignments as key drivers of the party’s momentum.
Yusuf also assured party members of the leadership’s commitment to strengthening cohesion within the party while expanding its grassroots support base across the state.
He called on supporters to remain steadfast and intensify mobilisation efforts as preparations for upcoming political contests gather pace.
Meanwhile, Shekarau announced his decision to join the APC while addressing supporters at his Mundubawa residence in Kano on Sunday.
The two-term former governor said the move followed extensive consultations with his political associates and a careful assessment of available options.
He cited internal challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a major reason for his defection, adding that his group also ruled out joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as lacking cohesion and struggling to establish itself politically.
