The Zamfara State Police Command has assured farmers of adequate security measures to safeguard their activities, farmlands, and agricultural produce ahead of the 2026 rainy season.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Bello, gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zamfara State Council, in Gusau.

Bello said the Command was reviewing its security architecture with a view to strengthening operations against criminal activities across the state.

“We are concerned about the insecurity issues bedeviling the state. The police are reviewing the security architecture to improve efforts in combating crime and criminal activities in the state,” he said.

He added that proactive steps were being intensified to ensure farmers could safely access and cultivate their farmlands during the rainy season.

“This is compulsory to ensure that poverty does not induce more insecurity in communities,” he said.

The Police Commissioner also disclosed operational successes since his assumption of duty, noting that several suspected bandits had been neutralised in separate encounters.

“Since my assumption as the 36th Police Commissioner in Zamfara, my first encounter neutralised 11 bandits and during the second encounter, the operatives killed another 37 criminal elements,” he stated.

Bello reiterated the Command’s commitment to eliminating banditry and other violent crimes in the state, while urging journalists to remain constructive in their reporting to support ongoing security and development efforts.

He also called for responsible media engagement to avoid undermining government efforts to attract investment into the state.

The Commissioner assured the media of an open-door policy to enhance communication and effective information sharing in the fight against insecurity.

In his response, NUJ Chairman, Ibrahim Maizare, commended the visit, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening collaboration between the police and the media.

Maizare pledged the union’s support for security agencies in addressing the state’s security challenges, while advocating for more inclusive engagement with journalists.
