Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Tuesday visited Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, where the embattled cleric is being held following his death sentence by a Kano State court over alleged blasphemy.

Sowore, who visited alongside Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, said the meeting aimed to assess the condition of the cleric and review documents relating to his ongoing appeal.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Sowore described Sheikh Abduljabbar’s trial as “politically motivated,” alleging that it was orchestrated under the administration of former Kano State governor and current APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

According to him, the judicial process that led to the conviction was “compromised, pathetic, and marred by betrayal,” alleging that some individuals close to the cleric allegedly collaborated with political and religious figures to secure his conviction.

Sowore said despite the circumstances, Sheikh Abduljabbar remained calm, resolute, and firm in his faith. He quoted the cleric as saying he was protected by Allah and would continue to uphold his teachings regardless of persecution.

The activist stressed that no individual deserves injustice, “no matter how popular that injustice may appear when fueled by manipulative political or religious forces.”

He confirmed that his team has received the Court of Appeal documents related to the case and will study them thoroughly, but emphasized that beyond legal technicalities, the focus should be on ensuring justice.

Sowore also condemned what he described as the weaponization of religion by “corrupt politicians who fear knowledge, dialogue, and dissent.”

He concluded with a call for the release of the cleric, using the hashtag #FreeAbdujabbarNow.
