The legislative council of Mashi Local Government Area in Katsina State has removed its leader, Hon. Sama’ila Idris, councillor representing Tamilo A ward, over alleged incompetence and misconduct.

The decision was taken during a council sitting held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the local government secretariat in Mashi. The session, attended by eight out of the 11 councilors, deliberated on a motion of no confidence against Hon. Idris.

According to the councilors, the ousted leader was removed for incompetence, failure to discharge legislative duties effectively, and acts of misconduct.

Following the resolution, Hon. Bishir Musa, councillor for Jigawa ward, was unanimously elected as the new leader of the council, while Hon. Haruna Dahiru from Sonkaya ward was appointed as the new Chief Whip.

Those who supported the motion of removal include:

  1. Hon. Bishir Musa (Jigawa)

  2. Hon. Babangida Haruna (Doguru B)

  3. Hon. Aminu Isa (Doguru A)

  4. Hon. Haruna Dahiru (Sonkaya)

  5. Hon. Bara’u Abdu (Gallu)

  6. Hon. Sagir Abdullahi (Shuaibu Mashi)

  7. Hon. Surajo Tukur (Tamilo B)

  8. Hon. Nura Surajo (Karau)

The council confirmed that copies of the resolution have been forwarded to the Katsina State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, the Executive Chairman of Mashi Local Government, the District Head of Mashi, the Divisional Police Officer, and offices of the DSS and NSCDC for record and enforcement purposes.

In its statement, the legislative council said the leadership change became necessary to restore accountability and ensure effective representation for the people of Mashi Local Government.
