In a renewed push to eliminate malaria in Katsina State, the government has received over 4.5 million malaria prevention commodities, including insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs), diagnostic tools, and antimalarial drugs.

The items were officially handed over by the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), with support from the Global Fund and in collaboration with partners such as the Society for Family Health and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The handover ceremony took place in Katsina and was attended by federal and state health officials as well as international development partners.

Representing the National Coordinator of NMEP, Ms. Ayodele Shakira expressed gratitude to Katsina State for its continued commitment to malaria elimination. “We are pleased to deliver these essential health commodities, which include ITNs, to support the state’s efforts. They were procured through government systems with Global Fund support,” she said.

Receiving the items, the Katsina State Commissioner for Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, commended the collaborative effort and reaffirmed the state’s resolve to ensure proper deployment and usage of the materials. “This is a crucial step in achieving the goals of this campaign. We are fully committed to supporting its success,” he stated.

Also speaking at the event, CRS representative Mr. David Dedanila urged both authorities and the public to ensure the commodities are used appropriately. “Although these items are being distributed for free, they were procured with taxpayers’ money from around the world. Their proper use is key to defeating malaria,” he emphasized.

The distribution plan includes:

  • 1,492,921 ITNs for 11 LGAs in the Katsina zone
  • 1,472,000 ITNs for the Funtua zone
  • 1,554,677 ITNs for the Daura zone

All items are stored in central warehouses located in Katsina, Funtua, and Daura, and will be distributed across the 34 local government areas in the coming weeks.

The 2025 ITN campaign will also align with the state’s Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) initiative to maximize impact. The event concluded with the formal transfer of ownership of the commodities to the Katsina State Government, along with a pledge of continued collaboration from all partners involved.
