Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, have arrived in London following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday afternoon at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
Reporting from outside the London Clinic in Central London—where the late president died—Channels Television correspondent confirmed that the two senior government officials landed at Stansted Airport early Monday morning. Their visit is to oversee the repatriation process and extend personal support to the bereaved Buhari family.
Although they have not been officially sighted at the clinic, credible sources informed Channels Television that both men are currently in the British capital as part of the federal government's high-level delegation managing arrangements.
Vice President Shettima has already paid a private condolence visit to former First Lady Aisha Buhari at her London residence, which is located not far from the clinic. The gesture is seen as both political and deeply personal, given his close ties to the family.
Behind the scenes, diplomatic and administrative processes are ongoing to facilitate the timely return of the former president’s remains to Nigeria. Buhari is expected to be buried in Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites and full state honours.
Meanwhile, world leaders continue to pay tribute to the late Nigerian statesman. Among them is Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his condolences via a tweet, praising Buhari’s leadership and contributions to African democracy.
Further official details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.
