FG Delegation Visits Niger Over Mokwa Flood Disaster, Promises Humanitarian Support

A high-powered delegation from the Federal Government has paid a condolence visit to the government and people of Niger State following the devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area, which claimed over 150 lives and destroyed hundreds of homes and infrastructure.

The delegation, led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, was received at the Government House, Minna, by the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the timely show of concern and solidarity with the people of the state. He described the flood incident as “shocking and devastating,” noting that the state government has commenced distribution of relief materials, including 6,000 bags of rice to affected communities.

He also disclosed that plans are underway for the construction of stem water drainage systems in Mokwa and Mashegu local government areas to prevent future occurrences. Additionally, he called on the Federal Government to provide a temporary camp for displaced victims, as the current shelter arrangements remain inadequate.

The Deputy Governor urged corporate bodies, humanitarian organizations, and individuals to support the victims, advising that all financial contributions be channeled through a government-approved account:
Account Name: Niger State Emergency Distress
Account Number: 2046096920
Bank: First Bank of Nigeria.

In his remarks, Minister Malagi conveyed the condolences of President Tinubu and members of the Federal Executive Council, describing the disaster as “one too many.” He revealed that the President has ordered the full deployment of available federal resources to manage the aftermath and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.

The Minister added that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has been directed to begin nationwide sensitisation campaigns against settling around riverbanks and flood-prone areas.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, who was also part of the delegation, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. She assured that her ministry is already liaising with international partners to mobilise aid and support for the victims, adding that a thorough needs assessment would be conducted to identify critical intervention areas.

According to official statistics made available to journalists, 151 bodies have so far been recovered and buried, seven persons are currently receiving treatment for injuries, 503 households were affected, 265 houses destroyed, two major roads washed away, and three bridges collapsed—all within three communities in Mokwa Local Government Area.
