In a significant political shift, a group of reform-driven youths in Katsina State has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in a bid to introduce a fresh approach to politics in Nigeria.
Led by young politician Salman Ahamed Gafai, the group formally registered with the SDP on Saturday, March 29, at the party’s state office along Kano Road, Katsina. They were received by the state chairman, Hon. Bello Safana, alongside the party’s secretary, Mustapha Kurfi, and youth leader, Mustapha Abdullahi.
Expressing his delight at the youth-driven political shift, Safana stated, “Your decision to join SDP signals progress and a promising future. We welcome you wholeheartedly.”
Explaining the reason for their defection, Gafai emphasized that SDP's policies align with their vision for justice and youth empowerment. “SDP stands for good governance and structured leadership, which aligns with our aspirations for political change in Nigeria,” he said.
Since voicing his discontent with APC’s leadership style, Gafai has actively mobilized youths ahead of the 2025 elections. This defection could pose a significant challenge to the ruling party in Katsina and beyond.
Among those who joined SDP with Gafai are Abas Usman, Mubarak Abdullahi, Anas Kabir, Tasiu Nafiu, Kabir Abdullahi, and Ibrahim Abdullahi.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the growing wave of political realignment, particularly among young people seeking credible leadership, continues to shape the political landscape.
