The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding free speech, fostering constructive criticism, and ensuring a conducive environment for journalism in Nigeria.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, made this declaration on Thursday during the ongoing Ministerial Briefing in Abuja.
He assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains steadfast in upholding constitutional freedoms and promoting open discourse as a pillar of democracy.
“I want to emphasize that President Tinubu, as a true democrat, is committed to protecting the rights of Nigerians as enshrined in the constitution. He also encourages responsible criticism and constructive opposition, recognizing their vital role in strengthening our democratic system,” Idris stated.
He further stressed that the government would continue to defend press freedom and provide an enabling environment for journalism, acknowledging the media’s critical role in governance, accountability, and national development.
The minister also congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, describing the milestone as a testament to the union’s dedication to press freedom and journalistic excellence.
“I appreciate the media for their unwavering commitment to disseminating crucial government policies and programs. This event coincides with a significant moment as the NUJ celebrates 70 years of defending press freedom and upholding professional journalism,” he added.
Idris explained that the Ministerial Briefing, spearheaded by his ministry, aims to provide Nigerians with comprehensive updates on government policies while reinforcing transparency and accountability.
“This platform allows ministers to inform Nigerians about progress within their ministries. Through modern technology, we ensure transparency by delivering direct updates on policies, programs, and ongoing reforms,” he stated.
He also praised Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar for strengthening Nigeria’s global reputation through diplomatic strategies and commended Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for implementing critical reforms in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
