Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, has launched the Rumbun Sauki initiative, a government-backed food subsidy program aimed at alleviating the economic burden on civil servants, pensioners, and the elderly due to rising food prices. The launch event took place at the market square near Barhim Estate, opposite the Katsina State Secretariat, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Governor Radda emphasized the significance of the program in mitigating the impact of inflation on residents.

“Today marks a historic moment for this administration as we launch Rumbun Sauki, a strategic initiative designed to ease the financial strain on workers and pensioners. We are all aware of the economic challenges we face, and we cannot stand by while our people suffer,” he stated.

The Rumbun Sauki scheme offers a 10% discount on essential food items, including rice, flour, and maize, making them more affordable for the public. The state government has allocated ₦4 billion for the initiative, which will initially operate in seven centers across Katsina, Daura, and Funtua, before expanding to all 34 local government areas.

According to Governor Radda, a transparent and efficient distribution system has been put in place to ensure that the subsidy reaches its intended beneficiaries. Eligible participants include state and local government employees, teachers, and pensioners aged 60 and above, who can access food supplies worth up to one-third of their monthly salary or pension.

The governor commended Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja, Special Adviser on Rural Economic Development, and all stakeholders who played a role in implementing the program.

Deputy Governor Malam Faruq Lawal Jobe lauded the initiative, describing it as a major achievement for the Radda administration.

“The Rumbun Sauki scheme provides direct relief to civil servants and pensioners while boosting economic activity in the state. It is expected to generate ₦30 billion in trade annually, creating job opportunities and strengthening the local economy,” he stated.

He further explained that the program allows beneficiaries to purchase food items on a zero-interest loan basis, with repayments deducted from their monthly salaries.

Speaking on behalf of the implementation team, Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the subsidy reaches those in need.

“This initiative was specifically designed by Governor Radda to cushion the effects of rising food prices. We urge beneficiaries to comply with the guidelines to ensure its success,” he said.

He added that while the program currently focuses on government workers and pensioners, plans are underway to extend it to low-income households in the future.

The Rumbun Sauki scheme is part of the Katsina State Government’s broader efforts to enhance food security, stimulate economic growth, and improve the welfare of its citizens. Governor Radda reassured the public of his administration’s commitment to implementing policies that will ease economic hardships and promote sustainable development.
