Abuja, February 24, 2025 – The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, has called for strategic policies to address Nigeria’s population growth challenges. Speaking at the 13th Annual International Conference of the Population Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Abuja, he emphasized the need for evidence-based solutions to turn demographic trends into opportunities for national development.
Hon. Kwarra noted that Nigeria’s population is projected to exceed 232 million by the end of 2025, presenting both economic potential and pressing social challenges. He urged stakeholders to develop strategies for sustainable growth, addressing issues such as urbanization, migration, and climate change.
Highlighting concerns in healthcare and education, he called for greater investments in maternal and child health services, expanded family planning access, and quality education to empower the country’s youth. He also stressed the need for economic diversification beyond oil dependency, advocating for development in agriculture and technology to boost employment and inclusive growth.
Hon. Kwarra reaffirmed the NPC’s commitment to data-driven decision-making, citing the upcoming Population and Housing Census as a vital tool for effective planning. He called for collective action to harness Nigeria’s demographic potential and drive sustainable development.
The conference also featured the unveiling of PAN’s 2025 Strategic Plan and plenary sessions on key demographic issues, including digitalization in census processes and the impact of funding cuts for family planning.
Dignitaries at the event included Federal Commissioners, NPC management staff, Prof. Patricia Lar, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, and Prof. Enang Erena, President of PAN.
