According to sources, the attack occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, when the assailants ambushed the vigilantes near the town’s secondary school. The victims have been identified as Alhaji Tukur Aliyu Dan Azumi and Nora Nasir Shakaka.
As of the time of this report, security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
In a separate attack, bandits struck a group of traders returning from a market in Yantumaki to Maidabino on Friday, January 31. The traders were traveling under military escort when the assailants launched an ambush, dispersing the convoy and killing two soldiers.
Eyewitnesses say military personnel have been providing escorts for traders due to persistent threats along the route. A survivor who spoke to Katsina Times described the attack as a well-coordinated assault.
Katsina State has been experiencing a surge in violent attacks, with local government areas such as Safana, Danmusa, Dutsinma, Kankara, Faskari and Batsari frequently targeted by armed groups.
Despite rising concerns, official confirmation from security agencies remains pending. Efforts to obtain comments from the Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
