These gates were located on the Wall that encircle  the Emir Palace  ( Gidan Korau). They were constructed at the same period with the wall, around 15th century. Kofar soro is the entrance gate to the Palace while Kofar bai is the back gate of the Palace.

During the reign of Emir of Katsina Alhaji Muhammadu Dikko (1906-1944) the old Mud Wall of Kofar-soro was demolished. Dikko gave Kofar-soro a new face lift by demolishing the old Mud Wall and rebuilding it with Cement, Sand  and gravel.

In the middle of the long Wall, a tall square story building with clock on each side was erected, and adormed with a bells, which rang after every one hour. It was the story building  which the people of Katsina called Soro.

Dikko cleared the western vicinity of Kofar soro and reserved it as a square for addressing people of Katsina when need arises and receiving Jahi from horse riders during  Sallah Festivals and for other purposes.

Still, on the western side of Kofar-soro, a Police headquarters was built, while on the Northern side, offices for the Sharia Courts known as Lower Sharia Court and  High Sharia Court were constructed. Before, then,  Sharia was  usually conducted in the doorways of the houses  of Judges. Also built on the  Northern side,  was an administrative offices of the Native Authority ( NA). On the Southern part of Kofar soro, a workshop  was erected  for the repairs  of Motors and for the other Mechanical Works. A little further to the South, a Modern  Juma'at Mosque was built by Dikko in 1937.

Emir Dikko, got the experience of rebuilding Kofar soro, from the Trapalga Square in London, at the time when he visited London in 1921. Kangiwa is a replica of Trapalga Square in London.
