Nigeria, Cameroon Sign New Defence Pact to Strengthen Border Security

Nigeria and Cameroon have formalised a new security partnership aimed at strengthening defence cooperation and tackling emerging threats along their shared southern border.

The agreement was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Yaoundé by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, and Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Assomo.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the pact represents a significant milestone in efforts by both countries to enhance regional security and deepen military collaboration.

The signing ceremony marked the conclusion of a two-day meeting involving defence and security officials from Nigeria and Cameroon, during which both sides reviewed strategies for addressing evolving security concerns on land and at sea.

Under the agreement, the two nations will strengthen cooperation in intelligence sharing, operational coordination, logistics support, joint military exercises, personnel exchange programmes and coordinated responses to security threats.

Musa described the MoU as a framework that would institutionalise military cooperation between the neighbouring countries and provide a more structured approach to tackling shared security challenges.

The discussions also focused on activating the recently established Combined Maritime Joint Task Force, which is expected to improve security operations within the Gulf of Guinea and protect strategic economic interests in the region.

The defence minister further highlighted the need for greater collaboration in defence technology and innovation, noting that limited local production of military equipment remains a challenge for many African countries.

He pointed to opportunities available through Nigeria’s Defence Industries Corporation framework and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to partnerships in defence manufacturing, technology transfer, research, innovation and capacity building.

Assomo, in his remarks, expressed Cameroon’s willingness to expand cooperation in defence technology and disclosed that discussions were ongoing to develop a formal framework that would facilitate concrete bilateral projects in the sector.

Officials from both countries described the agreement as a major step toward promoting lasting peace, protecting regional sovereignty and strengthening security cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon.
