From Zaharaddeen Ishaq Abubakar (Katsina Times)
Owerri, November 27, 2024 – Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has underscored the pivotal role of the media in strengthening democracy, as he addressed delegates at the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held at Rockview Hotel, Owerri.
In his opening remarks, Governor Uzodimma welcomed national and state leaders of the NUJ, journalists, and other dignitaries, praising their commitment to fostering peace and progress in Nigeria. He expressed gratitude to the NUJ National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, for selecting Imo State as the conference host, describing the choice as a testament to the state’s partnership with the media.
"The presence of journalists here underscores your dedication to fostering democracy and accountability. Comrade Isiguzo’s transformative leadership has not only reformed the NUJ but also elevated professionalism in journalism,” Uzodimma said, encouraging a smooth transition to the union’s next administration.
The conference theme, "Media and Democracy: The Journalist's Role in Holding Leaders Accountable," resonated deeply with the governor, who lauded the media as a cornerstone of democracy. He highlighted the press's role in shaping public opinion, fostering civic engagement, and promoting transparency in governance.
Governor Uzodimma outlined four critical functions of the media, as emphasized by Free Press Unlimited:
1. Providing Reliable Information – He called on journalists to combat misinformation through diligent fact-checking and unbiased reporting.
2. Acting as a Watchdog – The governor stressed the importance of holding leaders accountable to prevent abuses of power.
3. Facilitating Democratic Discourse – He urged the media to foster inclusive platforms for diverse voices, enabling informed public participation.
4. Reflecting Society's Diversity – Journalists were encouraged to ensure representation of all societal groups to promote equity and justice.
Governor Uzodimma further emphasized the significance of local journalism in driving grassroots accountability, referring to it as journalism for development or emancipatory journalism.
"Through collective efforts of journalists, policymakers, and the public, we can achieve a truly democratic and inclusive society," Uzodimma stated, reiterating the need for the press to remain resolute in upholding democratic principles.
The conference featured contributions from prominent figures, including guest lecturer Prof. K. Ike Chukwuma, who represented Dr. Ike Nelya, and former NUJ presidents Chibitoj Izoglu and Pastor Nare Ogundibe.
Governor Uzodimma concluded by extending a warm welcome to all delegates, wishing them fruitful deliberations during the conference.
