Owerri, Nigeria– Dr. Chris Isiguzo, the outgoing National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), delivered his valedictory speech at the NUJ’s 8th National Convention, marking the end of his six-year tenure. Addressing over 1,000 journalists, delegates, and observers gathered in Owerri, Imo State, Dr. Isiguzo reflected on the union's progress under his leadership and the enduring importance of journalism in Nigeria's democracy.

Speaking at the event, hosted by Imo State Governor His Excellency Dr. Hope Uzodimma, Dr. Isiguzo expressed profound gratitude to stakeholders, delegates, and the union's leadership. He commended the peaceful and hospitable atmosphere of Imo State, countering negative narratives of insecurity in the region.

"The peaceful ambiance and warmth we have experienced here underscore the exceptional leadership of His Excellency, Governor Uzodimma," said Dr. Isiguzo. "Imo State has demonstrated not just safety but remarkable hospitality."

 Achievements and Challenges
Dr. Isiguzo highlighted key accomplishments of his administration, including global representation through his roles as Chairperson of the Belt and Road Journalist Network and President of the Congress of African Journalists. These positions, he noted, showcased the NUJ's growing global relevance.

The outgoing president also underscored efforts to enhance journalists' welfare, citing collaborations with media stakeholders and the clearing of salary arrears for journalists in several media organizations. He credited his administration with spearheading training programs, both locally and internationally, to empower journalists with modern tools for the evolving media landscape.

"Under our watch, we laid the groundwork for the Journalism Enhancement Bill at the National Assembly to address critical challenges facing our industry and provide protections for journalists," he stated.

Dr. Isiguzo acknowledged the challenges faced during his tenure but expressed confidence in the solid foundation laid for the union’s future.

 Call for Unity and Integrity
In a heartfelt appeal, Dr. Isiguzo urged NUJ members to prioritize unity and accountability within the union.

"Our union is only as strong as its members. Close ranks, bridge divides, and unite for our shared goals. We must hold ourselves accountable as we demand accountability from others."

He charged incoming leaders to build on the progress achieved and lead with courage and integrity.

As he handed over the reins, Dr. Isiguzo expressed optimism about the NUJ's future. He thanked the Central Working Committee, council chairpersons, and chapel leaders for their unwavering support during his tenure.

"The best days of the NUJ are ahead. Together, we will continue to uphold the values of journalism, safeguard democracy, and inspire future generations of media professionals," he concluded.

The convention, which saw robust participation from journalists across Nigeria, reaffirmed the critical role of the press in fostering transparency and accountability in governance.

With a legacy of strengthened global ties and enhanced welfare for Nigerian journalists, Dr. Isiguzo's tenure leaves an indelible mark on the NUJ’s history. The torch now passes to a new leadership team tasked with steering the union toward greater heights.
