CIoTA HOSTS 6TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIoTA) successfully convened its 6th Annual Conference today in Abuja, focusing on "Sustainable Transportation in a Disruptive Era: The Challenges of Developing Economies." The event brought together key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s transportation sector to discuss the future of sustainable transport amidst global disruptions.
Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, FinsTA, the president and chairman, governing council, CIoTA, emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnerships in navigating the current era's uncertainties. He highlighted the need for professionalism in the transportation sector, stating, "The transportation profession should not be an all-comers affair. CIoTA is committed to changing this narrative to ensure we reach our destination of sustainable transport."
Obayendo also addressed the critical role of regulation in improving the sector’s image, advocating for stringent licensing, registration, and a code of conduct for operators to foster normalcy and professionalism.
In a significant announcement, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, His Excellency, George Akume, conveyed through his goodwill message that the Land Transport Policy is nearing completion and awaiting approval by the Federal Executive Council. Akume pledged his support to ensure the policy receives the necessary attention to enhance transportation across Nigeria.
Dr. Muiz Banire, the guest speaker, stressed the foundational role of transportation in human existence. He expressed concerns over road conditions and safety, urging for the prioritization of best practices across all transportation modes, not just land transport. His address underscored the need for comprehensive policies to ensure comfort, safety, and efficiency in transportation.
The conference was graced by prominent figures including His Excellency, Bello Masari, former Governor of Katsina and current Chairman of TETFund, Corp Marshal Shehu Mohammed of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Hon. Blessing Onuh, Chairman of the House Committee on Land Transport, and Professor Umar Adam Katsayal, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, among others.
The conference featured a special ceremony where distinguished individuals were inducted as honorary fellows of CIoTA, recognizing their significant contributions to the transport sector, while the day also included several plenary sessions where experts discussed various facets of transportation, including policy implementation, technological disruptions, and sustainable practices.
The conference, set to continue over the next two days, promises further deep dives into transportation issues with more plenary sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities aimed at fostering innovation and collaboration in the field.
