The Katsina State Government has announced a partnership with the World Bank’s Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) initiative, aiming to invest N20 billion in expanding clean water access across the state.
Speaking at a press conference, State Commissioner for Water Resources Hon. Bishir Gambo Saulawa highlighted that the project, backed by N5 billion from the state and N15 billion from SURWASH, will support clean water initiatives in both rural and urban areas. The first phase, covering 10 local government areas, is set to be completed within six months.
The initiative includes three key components: solar-powered boreholes with 8,000-liter tanks in 40 rural villages, hand-pump wells in 50 villages, and solar-powered boreholes with toilets in 20 additional communities. Senior officials from RUWASSA, STOWASSA, SEPA, and the Katsina State Water Board provided further details, noting that these efforts will impact neighborhoods in major towns and ensure reliable water access across the region.
This project is expected to boost public health, reduce water-borne diseases, and improve residents' quality of life across Katsina State.
