On 25 October 2024, the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Malam Faruq Lawal Jobe, announced the inauguration of a committee dedicated to implementing the N70,000 minimum wage and consequential adjustments for all categories of public sector workers in the state. This initiative, launched from the Office of the Deputy Governor at the Old Government House in Katsina, reflects the state government’s commitment to supporting civil servants affected by the economic impacts of fuel subsidy removal and other national economic policies.
During the event, Deputy Governor Jobe emphasized that the minimum wage adjustment would benefit state civil servants, local government employees, and various staff across public institutions in Katsina. The committee’s goal is to develop a clear strategy to implement this adjustment effectively and ensure financial relief for all eligible employees.
The committee, chaired by Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, includes prominent officials, such as the Head of Civil Service, Commissioners for Budget, Finance, and Local Government, and representatives from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON). They are expected to present their recommendations within three weeks.
“We are confident that the committee’s recommendations will enable us to provide essential financial support to our dedicated workforce, helping them manage rising living costs,” Deputy Governor Jobe stated.
This inauguration signifies Katsina State’s proactive stance on worker welfare and demonstrates the government’s commitment to economic stability for its civil servants.
