In a significant move to improve Nigeria’s electoral framework and amplify the political voices of women and youth, the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms, led by Deputy Chairman Senator Abdul'aziz Musa Yar'adua, organized an interactive session with representatives from the Northwest geopolitical zone. The session, held in Katsina State on Friday, provided a platform for youth and women to directly contribute their perspectives on amendments to the nation’s electoral laws.
In an exclusive interview with Katsina Times, Senator Yar'adua outlined the purpose of the conference, emphasizing the importance of gathering input from demographics often underrepresented in Nigerian politics. "This interactive session is part of a nationwide initiative to engage with women and youth, listening to their suggestions on how to make electoral reforms more inclusive," he stated. Following similar events in the South-South, Katsina was selected as the focal point for this critical discussion with representatives from the Northwest.
Senator Yar'adua highlighted that the conference aimed not only at legislative revisions but also at encouraging greater political involvement from youth and women. "One of our primary objectives is to motivate these groups to become actively engaged in the political process," he remarked. "By fostering dialogue with women and youth at the grassroots level, we aspire to create a democratic system that is both fair and transparent, instilling confidence across the citizenry."
Delegates from various states within the Northwest zone presented recommendations addressing ways to boost youth and women’s representation in leadership positions and enhance the transparency of the electoral system. Senator Yar'adua noted that many of these proposals are already under review by the National Assembly, with the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms actively working on viable amendments. He underscored that public input is crucial to the committee’s mission of creating an electoral system that accurately represents Nigeria's diverse populace.
Senator Yar'adua also encouraged participants to return to their communities and advocate for increased political awareness among youth and women, stressing that greater grassroots involvement is essential for an inclusive political culture. "Youth and women must play proactive roles in our political landscape," he noted, adding that community engagement is key to solidifying democratic values.
The senator further highlighted the importance of these discussions in narrowing the divide between citizens and government, particularly concerning the electoral process. "By facilitating these interactive platforms, we allow citizens to provide direct input, thus strengthening the democratic foundations of our electoral system," he said.
The Senate Committee’s dedication to inclusivity and transparency in electoral reforms reflects its commitment to building a political environment where every citizen feels their voice is valued. The Katsina session stands as a testament to the committee's commitment to developing a democratic process that truly represents the will of the people, especially those frequently overlooked in traditional politics.
As the session concluded, Senator Yar'adua reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to advancing these reforms. "This is just the start," he declared. "We will continue pushing for reforms that make our democracy accessible and fair, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of age or gender, have a hand in shaping Nigeria’s future."
