UNICEF, in collaboration with the Katsina State Ministry of Youths and Sports Development and the Ministry of Environment, organized a one-day sensitization workshop on the Green Rising 9ja movement at the State Secretariat Conference Hall. The workshop attracted around 30 youth groups with a total of 90 participants, focusing on combating climate change and open defecation.
UNICEF WASH Program Officer, Mrs. Stella Ify Terver, explained that the Green Rising 9ja movement is a UNICEF initiative aimed at raising awareness among youths about the need to fight climate change. The initiative includes tree planting, youth mobilization, and the creation of a voluntary army to support climate action. She highlighted that the workshop aimed to inspire the youth to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Muntari Kado, represented by the Director of Climate, commended the initiative, emphasizing the state's commitment to combat climate change by planting 1 million trees and demolishing illegal structures in dam areas. Meanwhile, the Director of Forestry, Muhammad Nasir Iliyasu, urged the youth to adopt tree-nurturing practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The workshop concluded with presentations from the youth groups, showcasing their climate action activities.
