Abuja, Nigeria— In a heartfelt address to the nation, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to channel their frustrations with bad governance through the power of their votes rather than through protests. Speaking as an elder and a concerned citizen, Kwankwaso highlighted the avoidable hardships that have beset the country since 2007 due to leadership missteps.
Kwankwaso pointed out that there is always room for correction and for setting Nigeria on the right path to economic development, prosperity, and improved citizen welfare. He emphasized that this can be achieved through good governance, respect for the rule of law, transparency, and accountability.
"It is sad to note that the attitude of our leaders toward poor governance has plunged citizens, especially the youth, into anger, hunger, insecurity, and hopelessness," Kwankwaso stated. He listed several instances of governmental mismanagement, including federal interference in Kano State's chieftaincy matters, the impeachment of Edo State's Deputy Governor, political crises in Rivers State, sabotage at Aliko Dangote's refinery, and the controversy surrounding the SAMOA agreement.
Kwankwaso called on the leadership at all levels to address the numerous challenges facing the nation. He urged Nigerians to be patient with the current government and to support it in achieving success. He stressed that if the government fails to deliver, citizens will have the opportunity to elect new leaders through their votes.
Kwankwaso acknowledged the recent calls for protests as a reflection of collective frustration and a yearning for change. However, he cautioned against protests, citing the potential for violence, loss of lives, property destruction, and deepened community divisions.
"Protests, while a fundamental democratic right, often come with unforeseen and dire consequences," Kwankwaso warned. "The tragic events of the past have shown us that protests can escalate into violence, leaving scars on our communities."
Kwankwaso concluded by encouraging Nigerians to utilize their ballots as a peaceful and effective means of achieving transformation and ensuring a better future for the nation.
