Katsina State Government Moves to Address Hisbah Corps' Alleged Human Rights Abuses

The Katsina State Government has inaugurated a committee to investigate a viral video on social media alleging human rights abuses by the Hisbah Corps. The committee will also scrutinize all activities of the Hisbah Corps.
The Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Abdullahi Garba Faskari, inaugurated the committee on behalf of the Acting Governor of Katsina State, Hon. Faruk Lawal Jobe, during a ceremony at his office.
According to Barrister Abdullahi Garba Faskari, the Katsina State Government received complaints from the public regarding the alleged abuse by the Hisbah Corps shown in the viral video. The video has sparked widespread criticism, showing Hisbah officers abusing individuals.
Barrister Abdullahi Faskari stated that the government established the Hisbah Corps to assist the community, not to abuse it. He emphasized that the government will not turn a blind eye to any form of human rights abuse.
The committee has been given guidelines and regulations to follow in their investigation of the authenticity of the viral video and the alleged abuses by Hisbah officers. The investigation will also cover accusations of maltreatment by Hisbah officers, the laws establishing the Hisbah Corps, and identifying any breaches that have led to human rights violations. Additionally, the committee will provide recommendations on how to address the identified issues.
The committee is tasked with identifying the officers involved in the abuses and recommending appropriate sanctions. They have been given ten days from the date of inauguration to submit their findings.
The committee members include the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Aliyu Lawal Zakari, as the committee chairman; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Security and Internal Affairs; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Government Reforms; the Chairman of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, Dr. Bashir Usman Ruwan Godiya; and the Director of Security in the Governor's office.
