On Saturday, June 22, bandits seeking ransom kidnapped and attacked the town of Maidabino in Danmusa Local Government Area Katsina state, spending over six hours terrorizing the residents.
Residents told Katsina Times that the assault began on Friday when the bandits blocked the Dutsinma-Yantumaki road and set traders' vehicles ablaze.
By Saturday evening, the assailants had entered Maidabino, killing seven people and burning two young children. They also kidnapped over a hundred women and took them into the forest, in addition to burning nine vehicles and several shops.
An affected resident informed Katsina Times that his vehicle was torched along with food supplies and fertilizer shops used for agricultural purposes.
Additionally, the bandits looted food supplies and livestock, with the remaining items set on fire. Most residents now face severe food shortages, as all their provisions have been destroyed.
Currently, Maidabino is left with only a few men, who are living in constant fear of another attack.
Katsina State, located in northern Nigeria, is one of the states grappling with banditry. Last week, more than a hundred people were killed in the villages of Dutsinma and Safana, with properties looted.
The governments of Katsina and neighboring states Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Niger are also struggling with similar issues and are making efforts to address the crisis. A security summit is expected to be held this week to discuss and find solutions to these security challenges.
