President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow and condemnation over the killing of five soldiers in Aba, Abia State, by suspected militants of the proscribed terrorist organization IPOB. The soldiers, on peacekeeping duty, were murdered on Thursday, marking the second such incident in recent months following a similar attack in Okuama, Delta State.
In a strongly worded statement, President Tinubu decried these acts as "unwarranted, barbaric, and evil," emphasizing that such behavior cannot be tolerated in Nigeria. He highlighted the critical role of soldiers and police officers in protecting citizens from aggressors and non-state actors, noting the significant sacrifices these personnel make, including paying the ultimate price and enduring mistreatment by those they protect.
"Our soldiers do not deserve these mindless attacks by unruly elements in our society," President Tinubu stated. He warned that the federal government will take decisive action against those who habitually attack armed forces personnel. "On no account should anyone, under any guise, have the audacity to kill agents of the state."
President Tinubu affirmed the government's and armed forces' capability to suppress violent non-state actors and restore safety in affected communities. He called on security agencies to not only apprehend the masterminds and perpetrators of the Aba attack but also those inciting civil unrest through calls for stay-at-home orders, labeling such actions as treasonable offenses.
The President clarified that the security forces' restraint should not be misinterpreted as weakness. "We are working to build a peaceful and harmonious society, but nobody should be under any illusion that the government will not act appropriately when the lives of our officers and men are wantonly taken."
Extending his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, their colleagues, and the leadership of the armed forces, President Tinubu encouraged other personnel on peacekeeping duties to remain steadfast despite the tragic incident.
