Speaker Abbas Urges Comprehensive Solutions in 2024 Budget to Alleviate Nigerians' Struggles

In a momentous session at the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, asserted that the upcoming 2024 Appropriation Bill must transcend a mere financial document, emphasizing its pivotal role in addressing the pressing needs of the Nigerian populace.
During the presentation of the N27.5 trillion budget proposal by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, tagged 'Budget of Renewed Hope,' Speaker Abbas garnered a standing ovation for his impassioned call to view the budget as a manifestation of collective determination to alleviate the challenges faced by citizens.
Highlighting the profound difficulties endured by millions of constituents, Speaker Abbas underscored the imperative for President Tinubu's administration to deliver swift and sustainable solutions. Acknowledging the President's commendable track record, he expressed unwavering confidence in Tinubu's ability to lead Nigeria towards a positive trajectory.
Addressing key priorities, Speaker Abbas emphasized the need for the 2024 budget to prioritize social welfare programs, job creation, and youth empowerment. He asserted that investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure are crucial for human capital development and overall economic growth.
Recognizing the challenge posed by high public debt, the Speaker outlined the National Assembly's commitment to ensuring the inclusion of concrete strategies for sustainable debt management in the budget. This includes measures to increase revenue through tax reform, fiscal reform, subsidy reform, foreign exchange convergence, and centralized revenue collection.
Drawing attention to longstanding issues hampering the budget process in Nigeria, Speaker Abbas proposed the enactment of a Budget Act to strengthen the process and enhance development outcomes, aligning with global democratic practices.
In concluding his remarks, Speaker Abbas assured President Tinubu of the National Assembly's commitment to prioritizing and expediting the consideration of the proposed Budget Act. He called for the cooperation of heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies during budget defense sessions to ensure a comprehensive and effective budget.
