The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by terrorists following his abduction.

The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, announced the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, describing the incident as a painful loss to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the nation.

According to Uba, the military deliberately refrained from making public statements about the retired officer’s abduction to avoid compromising ongoing rescue operations conducted by the armed forces and other security agencies.

He disclosed that extensive efforts and operational resources were deployed to secure Abubakar’s release, but the retired general sadly passed away before the mission could succeed.

“The Defence Headquarters regrets to announce the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who lost his life while in captivity after being abducted by terrorists,” Uba said.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, his friends, former colleagues, and Nigerians, describing the loss as a tragic one.

Uba paid tribute to Abubakar’s distinguished military career, noting that he served the country with dedication and professionalism in several key appointments. He recalled that the late officer served as spokesman for various military formations before becoming Director of Defence Information, where he contributed significantly to promoting the activities and operations of the Nigerian military. The defence spokesman also highlighted Abubakar’s contributions to counter-insurgency campaigns, personnel development, and broader national security initiatives throughout his years of service.

“His unwavering commitment to duty, professionalism and national unity remains a source of inspiration to members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” he said.

Uba stated that the incident had further strengthened the military’s determination to intensify operations against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal groups threatening the country’s security.

He added that security operations across the country had already been reinforced in response to rising cases of abductions and violent attacks, including the circumstances surrounding the retired general’s kidnapping.

Reaffirming the military’s resolve, Uba said the Armed Forces remained committed to dismantling terrorist networks, safeguarding citizens and restoring lasting peace across the country.

He assured Nigerians that troops would continue to pursue those responsible for acts of terrorism and criminal violence until they are brought to justice.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not relent in its efforts to restore peace and security and ensure that all those responsible for terrorist activities are held accountable,” he said.
