The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Katsina State Command, has intensified its reformation and rehabilitation initiatives across custodial centres in the State, with renewed emphasis on education and vocational skill acquisition as critical pillars for effective reintegration.
In furtherance of its mandate, the Command has recorded notable milestones in inmate education. At the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Funtua, over fifty (50) inmates successfully completed their primary education and were duly certified by the Local Government Education Authority. Similarly, more than thirty (30) inmates at MSCC Katsina (Old) are currently undergoing preparatory processes for enrolment into the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Katsina Study Centre, underscoring the Service’s sustained commitment to academic development within custodial facilities.
Complementing these educational efforts, the Command has expanded vocational training programmes aimed at equipping inmates with practical, income-generating skills. At MSCC Funtua, inmates are actively engaged in cap making, tailoring, and carpentry. In MSCC Katsina (Old), vocational activities include barbing, laundry services, tailoring, and the production of household items such as detergents, car wash solutions, petroleum jelly (Vaseline), air fresheners, Izal disinfectant, as well as knitted cardigans and sweaters.
At the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Daura New, inmates are productively engaged in irrigation farming, cultivating crops including onions, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, alongside structured training in animal husbandry.
These initiatives are in line with the core objectives of the Nigerian Correctional Service to reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate offenders as responsible and self-reliant citizens. The Katsina State Command remains resolute in its commitment to reducing recidivism through sustained investment in education and skill acquisition programmes.
