Suspected gunmen on Tuesday launched a deadly attack on Doma town in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing several residents and destroying a large part of the community.

KatsinaTimes gathered that the attack occurred at about 1:30 p.m. when the assailants reportedly entered the town without resistance, firing sporadically and setting houses and other properties ablaze in different locations.

Sources within the community told KatsinaTimes that the attack appeared to have been targeted at prominent individuals, including religious, traditional and community security leaders, raising concerns that the assault was deliberately planned against key figures in the town.

Those confirmed killed include Malam Nasiru Doma, the Chief Imam of Doma; Dan Bello, a ward head; Alhaji Kasimu Kawu, a businessman and Chairman of the Community Security Committee; Malam Sule Abba, a youth leader and community development advocate; and Inuwa Ruwangodia, a local medicine vendor.

Investigations revealed that many of the victims were at a farmland attending a family gathering over the sharing of the estate of the late Alhaji Ashiru Gari Doma when the attackers struck. Only a few people at the scene reportedly escaped.

At least 25 bodies were sighted as of the time of filing this report, while the search for missing persons was ongoing. Some residents said the death toll could rise above 30 as more bodies continued to be discovered.

Beyond the killings, the attackers reportedly set fire to more than half of Doma town, destroying houses, vehicles, shops, storage facilities and farm produce. Residents said the fire left many families displaced and without any means of livelihood.

As of press time, security agencies were yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, the community remains in mourning and fear, as traditional rulers and elders have appealed to the Katsina State and Federal Governments to urgently intervene and take decisive steps to safeguard lives and property in the area.
