Katsina State has recorded its first-ever gold medal at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, after Aliyu Bara’u emerged champion in the Best Gross Golf Game category.
Bara’u, considered one of Katsina’s most promising golf talents, outperformed strong contenders from Plateau and Ekiti States with a gross score of 76 points to secure the victory.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, reacting to the development, congratulated the young athlete for bringing honour to the state. He described the win as a reflection of the dedication and potential of Katsina’s youth in sports.
“This gold medal is not just Aliyu Bara’u’s personal achievement, it is a victory for Katsina State,” the governor said. “It shows what determination and discipline can achieve. We are proud of him and of all our athletes still competing. This administration will continue to invest in sports and create more opportunities for our youth to excel.”
Katsina’s contingent is also competing in Badminton, Fives, and Kokowa (Traditional Wrestling), with hopes of adding more medals to the tally.
Governor Radda recalled that the state government had recently celebrated champions of Fives, Judo, and Traditional Boxing at a colourful medal and trophy presentation ceremony. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting and motivating athletes, including potential sponsorships for international tournaments.
With Bara’u’s triumph, Katsina officials say they are optimistic that the state’s rising sports stars will continue to shine at both national and international levels.
