By Sabiu Ibrahim FagoDepartment of General Studies, Dr Yusufu Bala Usman College, DauraFrom 1917 when the first Western School was established in Daura, in the subsequent decades, more schools were opened across the Emirate; Zango Elementary School in 1936, Mai Adua and Baure in 1942 and Sandamu in 1945. The graduates of these schools were posted outside Daura to either Katsina, Kankia, or Mani for senior primary school education. It was later when a senior primary school was established in Daura in 1958 with Malam Dauda Daura as its Headmaster. By 1964, the Northern System was reviewed and the elementary schools were scrapped and replaced with as even-year primary education system. The former Daura Elementary School was changed to Daura II Primary School, since then, more schools continued to spring in the Emirate.°In Daura Local Education Authority (L.E.A.) currently, there are 49 public primary and 45 private schools!!. A Community Secondary School was established in 1969 (now Government Pilot Secondary School, Daura) and an Emergency Teachers? College (later Daura Teachers' College) in 1970. With the change of education policy and the implementation of the 6-3-3-4 system, many junior and senior secondary schools were established in the Districts and Villages of Daura emirate. Some of these schools were public, while others were private. In addition, there are some community-based schools such as the Community College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Daura established in 1998. There is one Federal Government College established in 1989. In Daura Zonal Education Quality Assurance, there are forty-five (45) registered and accredited junior secondary schools and thirty-four (34) senior secondary schools both private and public with Senior Secondary School Examination (S.S.C.E.) standards, 12 With the growth and development of secondary school education in Daura, there arose the need for tertiary education. Graduates of these schools furthered their studies in higher institutions in the state, neighbouring states and abroad. However, the demand for higher education received the government's support and intervention with the establishment of some institutions. The first higher institution established in Daura was Sani Zangon Daura School of Health Technology in 1978. This was followed by Dr Yusufu Bala Usman College, Daura (formerly Yusufu Bala Usman College of Legal and General Studies, Daura) in 2004 from the Hassan Usman Polytechnic Katsina).Community College of Arabic and Islamic Studies Daura in affiliation with the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello UniversIty, Zaria started a Diploma Programme in 2013. Most importantly, there was the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic Daura in 2019 (which took off in 2021) and the Federal University of Transportation Technology Daura, which is still under construction." 1 here are, 1n addition, centres for part-time degrees; one for the National Teachers' Institute, Kaduna at Dr. Yusufu Bala Usman. Daura and the other for Federal University, Dutsin-Ma at the Government Pilot Secondary School, Daura. The Impact of Western Education on the Development of DauraIt is an indisputable fact that education remained one of the vital agencies/facilitators of development as rightly depicted d by some Hausa poets especially Muazu Hadeja and Akilu Aliyu. These poets equate education in life as salt in a soup or stew, and that it is education/knowledge that take mankind to the greatest height while the ignorant could not even view or see that height. This was buttressed by Muazu Hadeja:Gishiri in babu kai ba miya,Ilimi mai gyaran zamani,Jama'armu ku jawo hankulanku,Ku lura da halin zamani,Iko, mulki karfi duka,Na ga wanda ya kaddari zamani.Ilimi shike gyaran kasa,Har a Santa a Wannan zamani.Salt contributes to overall flavour of soup,Education really worth time,Our people you be attentive and thoughtful,You give a look to ages,Power, governance, strength, all,I saw who sees ages,Education is crucial to nation building,To an extent of bearing known in this epoch,Education therefore served as the shining light in the development of Daura from all angles, viz: political, economic, social, religious and cultural.Poltical ImpactAs earlier pointed out, the responsibility of accepting and spreading Western education vested in the Emirs and Chiefs in Hausaland. To this end, one of the sons of the Emir of Daura Mal. sons of chiefs (Waziri Alasan, Mutawalle Amadu and Musa and other sons Sarkin Fada Mal. Abdu) were enrolled in the Dan Hausa School in Kano in 1910. Subsequently, other sons of chiefs were enrolled such as the late Emir of Daura Alhaji Muhammadu Bashar, Alh. Haruna Fada Babba, Alh, Nalado Yusuf Sarkin Sudan of Daura, Makama Jibir, Sarkin Tafarkin Daura and a host of others. Western system of education brought great transformation in the administrative of Daura. More importantly, the transcription of important records such as those of Bait-al-mal (treasury) were committed into writing when Matawalle Amadu (the first Head Master of Daura Elementary School), was appointed the Native Authority Treasurer, this replaeod transactions in 4jami soripture. Other offices of the N.A. were similarly filled by Western Educated Daurawa.Accompanied by this impact was the participation in politics during the first and second Republics and receiving political appointments by the Daura people. The late Emir of Daura Alhaji Muhammmadu Bashar was elected into the Northern Nigeria House of Assembly in 1960, then appointed the Minister for Local Government, and in 1961 the Minister for Economic Planning. Before this, Alhaji Haruna Fada Babba was elected to represent Daura Federal Constituency in 1954, for four years. In the 1958 federal elections, Magajin Gari Saidu was elected to the Federal House of Representatives for Daura East, while Alhaji Haruna Fada Babba was re-elected to represent Daura West. Under the military government of General Yakubu Gowon, Daura was offered two seats of Commissioner in the North-Central State, filled by Alhaji Haruna Fada Babba for Forestry and Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura for Information. During the second republic in 1979 after the federal election, Alhaji Yusufu Aliyu Kilishi from Daura was elected to the post of Senator representing Daura North Senatorial District. l6 Equally, during the military administration of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed. Lt. Col. Muhammadu Buhari was appointed the Military Administrator for North-Eastern State. With the resumption of military rule in Nigeria from 1983 to 1999, the Daura people gracefully received appointments at different levels of federal. state and local governments. Among these were D.I.G. Sani Daura Ahmed, (Military Administrator, Yobe State), Commissioner of Police Habu Daura, (Acting Military Administrator Bavelsa and Military Administrator Borno States). In Kaduna and Katsina States, there were the appointments of Commissioners, Heads of Service ((Alh. Yakubu Haruna and Alh. Lawal Aliyu), Secretary to the State Government (Alh.
