KATSINA ROYAL REGALIA, THE LONGEST TRADITION IN KATSINA EMIRATE.

    Katsina Royal Regalia was initiated by the first Muslim ruler of Katsina Muhammad Korau. Muhammad Korau was a visitor from Yandoto, who came to Katsina around the year 1348.   Before Korau the Durbawa were the first ruling dynasty in Katsina. The Durbawa were those who lived at Durbi-Takusheyi,   where their burial tombs are still located. They were giants and worshippers of ancestery idols, and spirit(Bori). 

   Muhammad Korau, the first Sarki in the Korau dynasty , ascended the throne by defeating Sanau in a wrestling contest, as was the tradition then. This tradition was changed by  Muhammadu Korau after Korau became the new King. Since then, the Kingship has been heriditay and restricted only to Royal  princess.

   Muhammadu Korau brought about remarkable changes in the Socia, political and economis condition in Katsina. The foundation of the Katsina Sarauta system which lasted for over three hundred was laid down in his reighn and in those of his imnediate successors. 

   Among the social tradition that Korau change in Katsina was the tradition of ceremonies on the day of turbaning new Sarkin Katsina at that time.  Traditions Indicate that when political institutions existed in Katsina, the major item of the Royal Regalia  is to this day are Tukunyar Karfe, the short sword known as Gajere, and a longer sword known as the Bebe. This was the traditional Royal Regalia during  Korau,s Dynasty. 

       However Korau's Dynasty was overthoughn by the Jihadists in 1807, this marked the beginning of the Dallazawa Dynasty. In Katsina the Jihad was led by Malam Ummarun Dallaje,  Malam na Alhaji and Malam Ummarun Dunyawa who received the flag from Shehu Usman Danfodio. After a very long struggle, hard work , dedication and total commitment to the cause of the Jihad. The Habe rulers were deposed and replaced by the Jihadists in 1807. 

      The tradition of these Royal Regalia's are still maintained  by the Jihadists. According to Sarkin Tambura the Gwauren Tambari was added into this Royal Regalies during the Dallazawa  Dynasty, because,  when Ummarun Dallaje and other Flagbearers arrived Sokoto with the intention of receiving flag from Shehu. The  Yan Tambari escorted them to Katsina. Sarkin Tambura origin are fulani of Toronkawa. 


      Uptill today , the Katsina Emirate under Sullubawa are still maintaind these Regalia which includes. 

1. GAJERE(THE SHORT ONE). 

  This was the sword used by Korau to slay Sanau in their wrestling contest in the pre-islamic days around the year 1348. The sword is still kept and maintained as an integral  part of the Emirate Royal Regalia. That sword has on one side an Arabic inscription from the holy Quran chapter 61 Verse 13, which translate to  "Help from Allah and a Speedy victory". And on the other side the Arabic inscription  translate to , "There is no sword, except Dhul-Faqar and no hero except Ali.   This sword is now adays held by the Emir of Katsina when ever he rides out for the Sallah procession or at Durbas. 

2. BEBE ( THE DEAF ). 

   This sword was captured on the battle field after the great victory against Sarkin Gobir Yakubu in 1795. It was the sword that the Sarkin Katsina  hangs across his shoulders on Sallah day or at Durbas. 

3. TUKUNYAR KARFE ( IRON POT). 

This is a bronze pot believed to belong to Korau, the first Muslim ruler of Katsina. The Pot was used for medical purposes  during the inter-communal War days. And to date is valued and treasured in Katsina Emirate. 

4. 

   This is the oldest drum in Katsina Emirate. It is called Gwauren Tambari  because it was the only one which has no partner. 

    Galadiman Katsina, beats this particular drum 12 times at the Coronation of a new Emir.
