KABUL – In a reminder of America’s past military entanglements, Russia has likened US support for Ukraine to the “humiliating fiascos” of Vietnam and Afghanistan. The Kremlin has warned that American support for Ukraine will be a decade-long mistake as the US Congress considers a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine amid Russia’s military advances.
“Washington’s deeper and deeper immersion in the hybrid war against Russia will turn into a loud and humiliating fiasco for United States such as Vietnam and Afghanistan,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, Reuters reported.
As negotiations culminate in a pivotal aid deal, wavering support among American conservatives adds complexity to the situation. Despite House passage of a broad foreign aid spending bill, including provisions for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, concerns persist over the effectiveness of assistance in the face of Russian aggression.
With CIA Director William Burns and Ukrainian leaders urging swift action, the urgency of bolstering Ukrainian defenses becomes apparent. Burns emphasizes the critical role of military assistance, warning of dire consequences without it, potentially altering the balance of power on the battlefield and shaping the terms of any future settlement.
Yet, as the specter of Afghanistan looms large, the reluctance of the US and NATO to deploy troops to Ukraine underscores the fundamental differences between past conflicts and the current geopolitical landscape. Amidst this backdrop, the fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance, with the echoes of history serving as a cautionary tale for the present.
