Death Trap on Kakumi–Guga Road: Eight Terrorists Killed as Military Crushes Planned Katsina Attack

A deadly assault being plotted against unsuspecting travellers in Katsina State was brought to an abrupt end after troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA intercepted and eliminated eight terrorists during a covert operation in Bakori Local Government Area.

Security sources disclosed that the operation, carried out by troops of the 17 Brigade under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA alongside Hybrid Forces, was the result of actionable intelligence on the activities of a notorious terrorist cell operating in the area.

The armed group, reportedly linked to feared terrorist commander Idi Abasu Aiki, had allegedly mobilised for an attack targeting commuters using the busy Kakumi–Guga Road. However, before the plan could be executed, security operatives moved into action.

Armed with intelligence on the terrorists’ movement, troops strategically positioned themselves along a suspected route and waited for the group to arrive. The terrorists, travelling on five motorcycles, reportedly advanced toward the location unaware that security forces had already anticipated their movements.

What followed was a fierce confrontation as the criminals ran into the security cordon. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, eight members of the gang were killed, effectively neutralising the threat before it could reach its intended targets.

The operation also yielded significant recoveries, including two AK-47 rifles and five motorcycles believed to have been used by the terrorists for mobility and attacks.

Military authorities described the mission as a major success, noting that it prevented a potentially devastating attack on innocent road users and demonstrated the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led operations against criminal networks in the North-West.

The military further credited the success to the close collaboration between conventional troops and Hybrid Forces, whose familiarity with the local terrain and movement patterns of armed groups provided a critical advantage during planning and execution.

In the aftermath of the operation, security forces have intensified surveillance and combat patrols across the area to prevent any retaliatory action by fleeing members of the group and to further tighten security around vulnerable communities.

The latest breakthrough comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle terrorist and bandit strongholds across Katsina and neighbouring states, as authorities maintain pressure on armed groups threatening peace and stability in the region.

Military commanders reiterated their commitment to sustaining offensive operations until criminal elements are decisively defeated and communities across the North-West can live without fear of attacks.
