The Police Service Commission (PSC) has intensified its campaign to enforce discipline within the Nigeria Police Force, dismissing four senior police officers and sanctioning 31 others for various acts of misconduct.
The disciplinary measures were approved during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement issued by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr. Torty Njoku Kalu.
The PSC said the four officers were dismissed after being found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct, and actions deemed unbecoming of public officers. The Commission described the decision as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, professionalism, and ethical standards within the police force.
Beyond the dismissals, the Commission approved a series of sanctions affecting several senior officers across different ranks.
Among those penalised, 10 officers were demoted. The affected officers include three Superintendents of Police who were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police demoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police, and five Assistant Superintendents of Police who were downgraded to the rank of Inspector.
The Commission also ordered the compulsory retirement of two officers in what it described as actions taken in the public interest.
Further disciplinary actions included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five others, warning letters for three officers, and a letter of advice issued to one officer.
However, the Commission cleared seven officers of wrongdoing after reviewing their cases and finding no evidence warranting disciplinary action.
Speaking on the decisions, Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.), reaffirmed the PSC’s resolve to uphold discipline and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force.
Argungu stressed that the current leadership of the Commission would maintain a zero-tolerance stance against misconduct, warning that officers who violate professional standards would face appropriate sanctions.
“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers. The Commission will continue to uphold discipline in the Force and match all forms of misconduct with commensurate disciplinary actions,” he said.
He added that while the Commission remains firm on discipline, it would also continue to reward diligence, professionalism, and outstanding service among deserving officers through its established recognition and reward system.
The latest disciplinary actions underscore the PSC’s renewed commitment to restoring public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force by ensuring that officers are held accountable for their conduct while promoting a culture of professionalism and excellence in service delivery.
