There is no Hunger in Nigeria: Nigerians Are Benefiting Despite Economic Challenges - Onanuga

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has defended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that many Nigerians are already benefiting from ongoing government programmes and infrastructure projects despite concerns over rising living costs and economic hardship.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Tuesday, Onanuga dismissed claims of widespread hunger across the country, insisting that recent reforms and development initiatives are delivering measurable benefits to citizens.

According to him, major infrastructure investments undertaken by the Federal Government are improving transportation and easing movement in key parts of the country. He cited his recent experience while travelling between Ibadan and Lagos, where he unexpectedly encountered a newly constructed concrete road after diverting from a traffic-congested route.

The presidential aide described the discovery as evidence of ongoing development efforts, noting that several road projects are transforming travel experiences for commuters.

He also pointed to the ongoing Lagos Coastal Highway project, saying it has significantly reduced travel time between Lagos Island and Ajah. Onanuga explained that journeys that previously lasted more than two hours can now be completed in just over an hour, providing relief for motorists and residents.

Beyond infrastructure, Onanuga highlighted social intervention programmes introduced by the Federal Government, particularly the student loan scheme and low-interest credit facilities for civil servants.

He argued that the student loan initiative is helping families cope with educational expenses by providing interest-free loans to eligible students. According to him, parents with multiple children in tertiary institutions are among those benefiting from the programme.

Onanuga further maintained that public discussions about the economy often focus heavily on hardship while overlooking the positive impact of government reforms and intervention programmes.

While acknowledging that economic difficulties remain a reality for many Nigerians, he said his observations and interactions do not support claims of extreme hunger across the country.

His comments come amid ongoing debate over the impact of key economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market.

Critics have argued that the policies have contributed to rising inflation and increased financial pressure on households. However, the Federal Government has consistently defended the measures, describing them as necessary steps to stabilise the economy, attract investment and create a foundation for sustainable long-term growth.
