The South African Consulate General in Lagos has moved to ease growing concerns among Nigerian travellers and investors over recent reports that led to cancelled or postponed trips following unrest and alleged attacks on foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

In a statement, the consulate said it was aware of reports indicating that some Nigerians had altered their travel plans due to media coverage of protests and isolated incidents of violence.

It reaffirmed that South Africa remains firmly committed to democratic governance, the rule of law, and the protection of everyone within its borders, regardless of nationality.

Authorities strongly condemned any form of intimidation, discrimination, or violent behaviour targeting foreigners, stressing that such acts have no place in the country.

The mission further noted that these incidents do not reflect the values of South African society, describing them as contrary to the principle of Ubuntu, which promotes respect, humanity, and unity.

Quoting President Cyril Ramaphosa, the consulate reiterated that South Africa continues to welcome lawful migration and international visitors, highlighting the positive role of migration in boosting economic activity, strengthening regional ties, and encouraging cultural exchange.

It added that concerns surrounding irregular migration remain a policy issue, but insisted that such matters must be handled through official legal structures rather than through public or unlawful action.

The statement also emphasized the importance of tourism, noting that Nigeria remains a key source market for South Africa, supported by long-standing cultural, historical, and economic connections between both countries.

Reassuring travellers and business stakeholders, the consulate said South Africa remains open, safe, and welcoming, with security agencies actively monitoring developments across affected areas.

It added that government institutions are continuing engagement with communities while reinforcing measures aimed at improving stability, safety, and social harmony nationwide.
