Governor Radda Inspects Assembly Centre for 500 Solar-Powered Electric Tricycles Initiative

Newsflash

The Executive Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, on Thursday visited the Assembly Centre for the State Government’s 500 Solar-Powered Electric Tricycles (Keke EVs) Initiative in Katsina, where he was briefed on the progress of the landmark project aimed at transforming urban mobility and creating sustainable economic opportunities for the people of the State.

During the inspection, the Governor was conducted around the facility by the Special Adviser on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, who provided a comprehensive overview of the project's implementation status, including ongoing assembly operations and workforce development activities.

The Governor was informed that the assembly of the first batch of 200 electric tricycles is currently underway in Katsina, marking a significant milestone in the State’s drive towards clean transportation, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and the adoption of environmentally sustainable mobility solutions in line with global efforts to combat climate change.

Beyond providing affordable and efficient transportation, the initiative has been deliberately designed as a vehicle for youth empowerment and local capacity development. To date, the programme has successfully trained two batches of youths drawn from Local Government Areas across Katsina State, equipping them with practical skills in electric vehicle technology, assembly, maintenance, and related renewable energy applications. These trained youths are now actively engaged in the assembly of the electric tricycles, creating a unique model that combines technology transfer, job creation, and industrial skills development.

The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, stimulate local economic activities, and position Katsina State as a leading subnational government in the adoption of clean energy technologies and green transportation solutions.

The initiative is being implemented under the supervision of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy as part of the Radda administration's broader agenda to promote sustainable development, strengthen local content participation, and empower young people with future-ready technical skills.

The Governor was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, alongside other senior government officials.
