Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who was kidnapped alongside his wife in Katsina State two weeks ago, has died while in captivity, the state government has confirmed.

Rabe and his wife were abducted near Matazu Local Government Area while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony. Their abduction drew widespread concern, particularly after a video surfaced online showing the couple in the custody of their captors.

In the footage, which lasted just over four minutes, the kidnappers outlined conditions they claimed must be met before the victims could regain their freedom. The retired military officer's wife was seen appealing to authorities and community leaders to intervene.

She stated that the abductors were demanding the release of three individuals identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru. According to her, two of the men had been arrested in Jikamshi, while the third was apprehended in Kano State.

The woman also called on the Katsina State Government and traditional leaders across five local government areas to help secure their release by addressing the demands of the kidnappers.

Rabe, who spoke briefly in the recording, appealed for peace and dialogue, noting that the armed group had expressed willingness to pursue a non-violent resolution.

However, hopes of his rescue were dashed on Saturday when the Katsina State Government announced his death.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu'azu, the government said the retired general died from health complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

Mu'azu described the development as tragic, noting that sustained efforts had been made by the government and security agencies to secure the former military officer's freedom.

"The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar," the statement read.

According to the commissioner, the late officer's death represents a significant loss not only to his immediate family and Katsina State but also to the nation, considering his years of service to the country.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting communities across the state and the need for intensified efforts to combat criminal activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the fate of Rabe's wife remained uncertain, with no official confirmation on whether she had regained her freedom or was still being held by the kidnappers.
