Football stakeholders have thrown their weight behind the ongoing rebuilding project of Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, following Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly played in Leiria.
Despite the loss, many observers believe the performance offered encouraging signs of progress under Head Coach Eric Chelle as the team continues its transition ahead of future international competitions.
According to reports, football enthusiasts and analysts praised the resilience displayed by the Eagles against the World Cup-bound Portuguese side and urged patience as the squad evolves.
Super Eagles supporter Victor Oluwole described the team's display as impressive, particularly given the absence of influential stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
According to him, the emergence of Sevilla striker Akor Adams, who netted Nigeria’s lone goal in the 37th minute, underscores the depth and potential being uncovered within the squad.
“The team showed determination and character against a strong Portuguese side. The rebuilding process is clearly taking shape, and if the current trajectory is maintained, Nigeria can become a formidable contender at the next Africa Cup of Nations,” he said.
Oluwole also called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to provide Chelle with the stability needed to execute his plans successfully.
“The coach should be allowed to work independently and continue selecting players strictly on merit. Consistency and patience are vital if the team is to reach its full potential,” he added.
Sports analyst Olanrewaju Afolabi described the encounter as a positive test for the Eagles, noting that the team held its own against one of Europe’s leading football nations.
He singled out Alex Iwobi for praise after the midfielder earned his 100th international cap, describing the milestone as a significant achievement in Nigerian football.
Afolabi acknowledged that goalkeeper Maduka Okoye could have reacted better to Pedro Neto’s opening goal but commended him for producing key saves that kept Nigeria in contention during the match.
He also lauded Chelle’s decision to introduce fresh faces, including six players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), saying their inclusion demonstrated the quality available within the domestic league.
“The coach deserves recognition for broadening the talent pool. The performances of the home-based players showed that local talents can contribute meaningfully to the national team,” he said.
For Bunmi Haruna, coach of AA Football Club in the Federal Capital Territory, the match offered valuable lessons for Nigerian football.
“The game highlighted the gap between Nigeria and some of the world's elite football nations. However, it also showed areas where improvement is possible. With proper planning and support, the team can continue to grow and compete at the highest level,” he stated.
Haruna urged football administrators and supporters to remain patient and continue backing the players and technical crew as they work towards future success.
Also speaking, FCT-based sports analyst Adeolu Johnson expressed confidence in the direction of the team under Chelle, noting that the coach has expanded the squad by identifying and integrating promising talents.
“Coach Chelle has done well since taking charge. He has introduced new players and created healthy competition within the squad. The signs are encouraging,” Johnson said.
He further advised the NFF to arrange more high-profile international friendlies, arguing that regular exposure to top opposition would accelerate the team’s development.
Johnson, however, lamented Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing it as a missed opportunity for one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
“It is disappointing that Nigeria will not be at the World Cup. Instead of competing, we will be watching from the sidelines,” he said.
Portugal secured victory through goals from Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceição, while Akor Adams found the net for Nigeria.
The friendly served as Portugal’s final tune-up ahead of its 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17 in Houston, United States.
