Residents of Rugar Bayan Dutse, a Fulani settlement located along the Danguza–Kakumi axis in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, were thrown into panic in the early hours of Thursday following a deadly attack by suspected bandits.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants stormed the community at dawn, firing sporadically and creating fear among residents. During the attack, one person, identified as Da’uh, described by locals as a peaceful and hardworking member of the community, was killed.
In addition to the fatality, the attackers reportedly made away with a large number of livestock, dealing a heavy economic blow to the affected families, most of whom depend on animal husbandry for their livelihood.
Residents told KatsinaTimes that the incident has heightened tension in the area, as it is the first recorded attack since a peace agreement was recently reached in Bakori Local Government Area. The agreement had raised hopes of renewed safety, following reconciliation efforts that allowed residents to return to their villages and settlements without fear.
“This attack has shattered the fragile peace we thought we had regained,” a resident said, expressing concern that renewed violence could undermine ongoing peace efforts in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from security agencies regarding the incident. However, community members have appealed to the Katsina State Government and security authorities to intensify patrols along vulnerable rural corridors to prevent further attacks.
The killing of Da’uh has plunged the community into mourning, with residents praying for the repose of his soul and calling on authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Community leaders have also urged residents to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies, while praying for a permanent end to banditry and other forms of insecurity in Bakori and across Katsina State.
